Partner with other technical staff for the effective operations of mission-critical production systems, including maintenance of up-to-date systems documentation.
  • Self-initiate and prioritize his systems engineering/administration duties, including determining and defining the course action necessary to obtain the desired result and advise senior department staff. Serve as an escalation point for staff in the identification and correction of moderately complex-to-complex computing systems and applications problems. Coordinate with other staff or vendors.
  • Direct and/or perform the collection, analysis, and reporting of operational data for use in maintenance, performance tuning, and capacity planning for future enhancements/upgrades.
  • Recommend possible new systems for development/acquisition and oversee installation, configuration and maintenance of major software and hardware components as approved by departmental management. Partner with other IS staff in the development of and compliance with standards for systems in the data centers and elsewhere, including networking standards, rack layouts, console or monitoring systems, or other tools used in daily operations and maintenance.

Project Planning and Implementation (10% of time)
Apply operating system/systems engineering expertise in the planning, analysis, design, and implementation of new or evolving information systems or services.

  • Recommend modifications, including upgrades, additions or deletions to moderately complex or complex systems or services. Provide analysis and justification for recommendation, which may include operational data, feasibility, technological motivations, customer demand or need. Perform impact and/or risk analysis of how a change may affect other enterprise systems or applications. Develop written project proposals.
  • Help determine and develop approaches and strategies for implementations that may require innovative solutions to unique and complex problems. Develop written project plans.
  • Provide technical direction and leadership to junior staff through the planning and implementation processes. Partner with other IS or end user staff for the effective implementation of projects, including transition of model systems to production-level operations and support.

Documentation and Outreach (15% of time)

  • Develop and implement technical documentation and operational procedures to support day-to-day operations, change management and growth, including integration of new or revised computing systems or services.
  • Contribute to and participate in peer review of user-related documentation on IS services or support standards as developed by technical support staff.
  • Participate in user education activities such as demonstrations or orientations.
  • Provide technical consulting to Engineering/QA/Deployment staff where such educational activity does not interfere with the execution of the Engineer’s principle duties.
