Widevine Technologies, Inc. Launches World's First Cross Platform Streaming Media Security Technology - Widevine Cypher™

Firm Focuses World-Class Development Team On Technical Solutions for Total Control of Internet Content Delivery

Seattle, WA, September 25, 2000 – Widevine Technologies, Inc. announced today that it will launch its first product at Digital Hollywood 2000, held September 25-28 at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, California. Widevine Cypher™ is a revolutionary product that provides true security for Internet distribution of digital streaming media - with minimal impact to content distributors and consumers.

"Our engineers across the country have been developing Widevine Cypher for more than 18 months, and it has been difficult to keep it secret, given the incredible effects it will have on the streaming media industry," said John Beyer, CEO of Widevine. "It's the first viable solution to the security issues facing the growing Internet broadcast industry."

"We are honored that DNP has joined as a shareholder of Widevine," Beyer said. "We have a great respect for their understanding of the global media marketplace and the many uses of encrypted streaming media. Partnering with DNP is an important step in our overall global business strategy."

"Widevine Cypher provides industry-leading security for preventing piracy of streaming media on the Internet," Beyer continued. "At the same time, it's fully compatible with all major streaming technologies, and is virtually transparent to content providers and end users. It requires no plug-in download and does not degrade performance. We consider it the first truly complete streaming security solution and an important advance in the state of the art."

Artists, authors, filmmakers, musicians, and media companies are looking toward the Internet to find a wider audience for their work, to open new avenues of distribution, and, ultimately, to generate additional revenue, said Beyer. The Internet's indifference to national borders, immediate delivery capabilities, and growing community focus make it a natural vehicle for distributing creative works to the public. However, major content producers have largely taken a wait-and-see attitude to the Internet due to concerns about piracy of copyrighted material and the quality of the end-user experience. Widevine's new product addresses both of these concerns by providing industrial-strength encryption to prevent piracy while maintaining a quality end-user experience. No extra bandwidth or server hardware is required, and end users receive the same quality of picture and sound as always in their multimedia players.

Key features of Widevine Cypher include:

  • Compatibility with all major streaming technologies, including Real, Windows Media, and QuickTime.
  • Support for industry standards, including TCP/IP, UDP, HTTP and RTP/RTSP, virtually guaranteeing compatibility with future streaming technologies.
  • Seamless deployment and integration, with minimal changes to the server cluster and a small but scalable footprint - no extra hardware or software needed on the server.
  • Automatic "thin client" installation on Windows provides total end-user transparency and invisible upgrades (other platforms may require one-time manual installation).
  • End users see only their familiar media player application or browser plug-in.
  • Secure return channel for quality-of-service monitoring, microbilling, and other application-specific uses beyond media control.

"This is only the beginning for Widevine Technologies," said Brian Baker, President and Co-Founder of Widevine. "Our entire team is focused on developing streaming media technologies that empower content producers and broadcasters to use the Internet to its full potential. Launching our streaming security product is an important milestone for us, and there are many more milestones to come."

"In my 15 years of experience, developing projects for companies such as Microsoft, Apple and Adobe, I've never worked with a development team with such expertise, experience and seniority," said Brad Kollmyer, Chief Technology Officer. "We are producing multiple products with strong potential in a myriad of markets. Widevine Cypher is a very strong beginning for our promising new suite of solutions focused on controlling streaming Internet content."
