Widevine Technologies, Inc. Launches Widevine Cypher™ Version 2.0
Firm Adds Key Interactive TV Security Features into its Virtual SmartCard Based Content Security Solution
Seattle, WA, August 20, 2002 – Widevine Technologies, Inc. announced today that it will launch its latest iTV security product at IBC, the premier broadcast show, in September of this year at Amsterdam. Widevine Cypher™ version 2.0 will include such new features as pre-encryption for VOD files, Application Level encryption for transparent and persistent encryption to support VOD servers and PVR’s, and a Set Top Box embedded version of the Widevine Virtual SmartCard.
“Operators are looking for better more cost effective solutions for securing their iTV deployments,” stated Brian Baker, CEO of Widevine. “The Virtual SmartCard creates a solid low cost base to develop better solutions for today’s needs.”
Cypher 2.0 will first be based upon the industry’s only Virtual SmartCard. Embedding smart card functions into a software module is the unique way to increase functionality and lower costs. “Operators are insisting on reducing the customer premise costs and traditional CAS vendors are not responding” said Baker. “Our goal is to develop a product set that provides a more appropriate solution for iTV at a better cost.”
The key feature set of persistent encryption is achieved by the combination of pre-encryption using Widevine’s unique application level method. VOD files are parsed and only video and audio components encrypted. This allows the transport stream to pass transparently through the network and such things as VOD server ingestion, onto PVR’s or network storage. Hollywood has long insisted that its content remain encrypted while stored on any device and Widevine’s Cypher 2.0 is the only solution on the market to facilitate that need.
Key features of Widevine Cypher 2.0 include:
- Virtual SmartCard – security features in a secure software implementation. Provides rapid renewal of security and a lower cost per subscriber.
- Application Level encryption – leaves critical control data in the clear, providing transparent encryption that may now persist through the network.
- Pre-encryption for VOD – VOD files are now encrypted prior to ingestion on the server allowing – without affecting trick play. VOD assets are persistently encrypted.
- PVR support – Operators can now deploy PVR features with confidence. Widevine’s persistent encryption protects all content (VOD or Broadcast) even while stored on a customer premise device.
- Robust XML interface to middleware for subscriber, asset (VOD) and service (Broadcast) management.
- Rich business rules expression for entitlement control. Supports VOD, NVOD, SVOD, Packages, groupings, blackouts, and more.
- On-the-Fly encryption for Broadcast events and services. Each Cypher Broadcast can support up to 100 channels.
- Client support for Windows and Linux Set Top Boxes and PC’s.
- Strong encryption – currently AES 128 bit.
