DNP Initiates Trial of Real-time Encrypting of Video and Audio Data Streaming

System will Protect from Illegal Copying and Distribution

Seattle, WA, September 16, 2002 – Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. today announced that in collaboration with DNP Digitalcom Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Tokyo, President: Kanji Nishijima), a 100% subsidiary of DNP and in charge of planning and production of digital media contents, will initiate an evaluation test of real-time content data encryption through BB Galaxy, a streaming video and voice distribution service and a part of DNP’s Web solution service, Media Galaxy. Encryption and distribution testing will begin on September 24.

With the rapid expansion of high-speed, high-volume Internet connections, such as ADSL and CATV the broadband market is rapidly maturing. Broadband lines enable customers to easily access rich media content that incorporate video and audio, and allow businesses to effectively distribute sales promotions and communication activities. In correlation, the demands for video and audio distribution services are rapidly increasing. However, when distributing content over the Internet, businesses carried the risk of redistribution through illegal copying, added expenses in copyright protection services or difficulty introducing compatible encryption software.

The test service responds to the above business needs, and was developed by incorporating IPCypher™, developed by the Seattle, Washington based Widevine Technologies™ (CEO: Brian Baker), a company with investments from DNP. The system prevents illegal copying on a network or client PC by encrypting data in real-time and eliminating the need for secure data processing before data streaming. Users are able to use the system by installing the plug-in software.

Functions of IPCypher™ are as follows:

  1. Users can easily use the system by installing the plug-in software.
Once IPCypher™ is installed on the client PC, users are able to easily stream encrypted video and audio data.
  2. Compatible to major streaming media player formats.
Compatible to Windows Media™ Player, RealPlayer™, and QuickTime™
  3. An encryption process before data streaming is unnecessary. As the server encrypts streaming data in real time, the need to encrypt data prior to streaming is unnecessary.
  4. Powerful protection against illegal copying and illegal distribution.
    • As the streaming data is encrypted for distribution, the data cannot be used if illegally acquired from the network environment.
    • Streaming data decoded by the plug in software is protected from illegal copying as illegal copying is detected and distribution is automatically terminated.
  5. Compatible with varying operating systems
The system is compatible to Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP operating systems.

Since 1995, DNP has closely watched trends in the US Internet industry, and has applied a system for implementing new and effective technologies from venture businesses. Widevine's real-time data encryption and distribution technology quickly came to DNP's attention, and in 2000, the company initiated its evaluation of Widevine's IPCypher TM product. This test, conducted in BB Galaxy, is a result of the initial evaluation, and Widevine will continue to work with Japanese businesses that have shown interested in further developing the product. Widevine's product portfolio will also expand in the Japanese marketplace, by targeting content holders and streaming data businesses.

DNP already provides various services, such as digital watermarks and the content distribution platform, Dplats (*2), that allow consumers to enjoy digital contents while protecting content holders from revenue loss through illegal copying and distribution. Furthermore, this evaluation test will further structure DNP's copyright management business of video and voice data streaming.
