Nagravision Integrates Widevine Technologies' IPCypher System Into Its Broadband Digital Conditional Access Platform
Nagra IP Addresses Exploding Demand for Broadband Network Conditional Access
Switzerland & Seattle, WA, September 30, 2002 – Nagravision has successfully integrated Widevine Technologies' real time encryption technology, IPCypher, into its NagraIP broadband security solution, to provide broadband service operators with a true, available, flexible and secured persistent protection solution for delivering rich media over IP networks - cable, xDSL, FTTH, FTTC and wireless. The NagraIP solution supports secure IP delivery in accordance with digital video broadcasting standards and is designed to function with all IP appliances, such as set top boxes, PDAs, mobile phones and PCs.
Many service operators are building, or migrating to, next generation IP broadband networks in order to reduce operation and maintenance costs, and increase their offering with additional IP-based services such as true interactive applications, IPTV, VOD, VoIP, games, Internet, and so on. "The IP convergence has brought forward additional security requirements that our 15 year experience in conditional access and security systems has allowed us to answer", said Ronald Wing, VP Marketing, NagraVision. "Widevine's industry leading real time scrambling technology integrated with NagraVision's widely deployed and time proven conditional access system allows Nagravision to extend its leadership position for digital television conditional access to the world of broadband IP networks."
"IP drives the convergence of a number of media services, and is becoming key for service operators to be competitive in the market for new features" said Brian Baker, President and CEO, Widevine Technologies. "Nagravision is the premier conditional access provider for digital television over cable and satellite. Their proven scalability and documented reliability are well known to both the content owners and service providers - who will be unable to find any competitive solution with proven reliability, proven scalability and next-generation IP functionality."
According to analyst firm IDC, worldwide revenues for IP services are growing almost 50% annually, and are projected to climb as high as $25 billion by 2004.
The integration of IPcypher into NagraIP makes the latter immediately available to global customers deploying IP networks or transporting IP over existing networks. This unique solution offers unprecedented benefits:
- Persistent encryption: Data encrypted by NagraIP can be held securely in network or client storage devices such as a personal video recorder or at any point in the distribution chain without any changes to software or hardware of third parties.
- Rights management and Content security modules: NagraIP addresses the complete distribution chain: creation, distribution, aggregation, delivery and usage. It has many advantages over classical DRM solutions, such as supporting unicast and multicast, and having extensive records of successful deployments.
- Smart card: the use of a secure storage and processing device, proven in numerous existing deployments worldwide, allows NagraIP to extend the variety of secured applications running at the end device.
- Real-time encryption: Capability of unique session-based encryption and fully automated support for broadcast, live events and archived content.
- Intelligent and Transparent encryption: IPcypher system can recognize and scramble the pure audio and video data of multiple media formats (MPEG 2 and 4, Windows Media, Real, QuickTime etc.) Encryption is done without data expansion, utilizing standards and U.S. Government approved cryptography methods. In addition, encrypted data can effectively navigate all devices on IP networks such as proxies, NATs, firewalls, caches, storage devices, and client hardware/software processes.
- Client-side security technologies: IPcypher provides tamper evidence and tamper monitoring capability for open or semi-open client environments. It prevents data packets from being captured by network stack hacking, screen-scraping, VCR- like utilities, in-circuit emulators, and other techniques.
