Widevine Technologies® Launches Support for Windows Media 9
Adds Security for WM9 to its Comprehensive Content Security Product
Seattle, WA, March 24, 2004 –Widevine Technologies, the largest provider of content security solutions to the video over IP market and inventor of the Cypher Virtual SmartCard™, today announced support for Windows Media 9 codec in its Widevine Cypher® brand of security products. The support will provide Broadband Operators with more choices for delivery.
The Widevine Virtual SmartCard solution significantly lowers the costs of securing content over video networks while dramatically raising the bar on piracy. Today, the Virtual SmartCard is being deployed in broadband video projects throughout the world.
While broad support for Windows Media from Broadband Operators has not yet been established, choice in encoding formats, equipment and features are critical to the deployment of a successful video service. Having the flexibility to choose such criteria will help Operators in deploying their services immediately, while keeping the door open for new innovations.
“Operators are very interested in the advanced codecs and Microsoft is certainly in the running for that business,” said Glenn Morten, Widevine’s Vice President of Engineering. “However, Microsoft’s security implementation falls short of what Broadband Operators need. Operators are looking for turnkey solutions with flexibility for future innovation. Microsoft’s DRM solution is a toolkit, requiring significant integration and after deployment management.”
Microsoft delivers the DRM component of its Windows Media solution set in the form of a toolkit and PKI infrastructure. That requires a detailed integration into the Operator’s environment and continued management of the infrastructure for license generation and revocation. Widevine’s solution takes the burden of integration and management off of the Operator. A single integration to Widevine Cypher solution allows multiple codec support.
“DRM is only part of the answer,” said John Hoskins, Widevine’s Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales. “Security plays a key role in maintaining control over the Service Operator’s economic model for video delivery. With a turnkey security solution like Widevine Cypher, Operators are in the best position to maintain ownership of their subscribers. Widevine has always supported Windows Media technology and we believe Windows Media 9 may become a valuable addition to the other available compression technologies such Mpeg 2, and Mpeg 4 AVC. Supporting it is a logical extension of our suite of solutions.”
The key advantages of Widevine Cypher’s WM9 support include:
- Operator control of business models
- Flexibility in CODECs, Video servers, and STBs
- Integrated, turnkey solution
- Manageability
- Scalability
- Performance
