Amino Communications to Provision Widevine Technologies Virtual Smart Cards in Its Set-Top Boxes
Software security solution to allow strong trust establishment over IP networks
Seattle, WA, September 3, 2004 –Cambridge England and Seattle WA, September 3, 2004–Widevine has made a significant development from simply integrating on Set Top Boxes, to implanting components of its Cypher Virtual SmartCard™ directly into the set top during manufacturing. Amino Communications, based in the UK, provider of small, low cost, high functionality set-top boxes, will begin provisioning its boxes with the Cypher Virtual SmartCard™ from Widevine Technologies, the largest provider of content security solutions to the video over IP market.
Customers currently using the Amino / Widevine solution will now have greater flexibility in deploying their set top boxes.
The Widevine Virtual SmartCard solution significantly lowers the costs of securing content over video networks while dramatically raising the bar on piracy. This advancement greatly increases the establishment of trust with Amino set top boxes. The result is that Operators can now deploy Amino boxes in a Widevine environment securely without any Operator intervention. Today, the Virtual SmartCard is being deployed in broadband video projects throughout the world.
"We believe Widevine’s Virtual SmartCard to be an extremely valuable feature of our set-top boxes," said Bob Giddy, CEO Amino Technologies PLC. "Our customers are seeking the highest quality, most current video content available for their service and Widevine’s security technology will protect that content and insure its value.”
“In an age of digital piracy, Widevine’s technology is rapidly being adopted by the global marketplace as service operators recognize the need to protect content and revenue streams,” said Brian Baker, President and CEO of Widevine Technologies. “We congratulate Amino Communications for taking this proactive step. They are the first in what we expect to be several others to follow."
“For new services like VOD to offer more valuable digital content, better security technology is mandatory,” said John Hoskins, Widevine’s Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales. “Establishing initial trust with the consumer premise device is the first critical step in that security and where Widevine differs itself from the other software based content security solutions. This program relieves the Operator of that risk.”
