Widevine Technologies’ Advanced Content Security Technology Integrated into HP Rich Media Solutions
SaskTel First Customer to Benefit from Widevine and HP Collaboration
Seattle, WA, September 7, 2004 –Widevine Technologies, the largest provider of content security solutions to the video-over-IP market and inventor of the Virtual Smart Card, announced today that it has entered into an agreement with HP that will enable broadband service operators to deploy rich media solutions that integrate robust security technologies. Widevine technology is an important content security solution in HP’s Rich Media Solutions program for service providers.
Demand for rich media content is increasing and so is the need to manage and protect the digital content. Security has been identified as a key business challenge for service providers, telecommunications companies, and enterprises, as well as government and education organizations. These providers need premium entertainment content to drive high take rates for their video-on-demand services, but they need to assure content owners that the content is protected.
Widevine and HP have recorded an early success. Saskatchewan Telecommunications plans to use Widevine Cypher security for its video-on-demand service, which offers compelling Hollywood content to subscribers. The solutions run on industry-standard HP ProLiant servers which provide the carrier-grade, high-availability performance that service providers need.
“Exciting content is critical to the overall success of our video-on-demand service,” stated Bob Turner, General Manager, Digital Interactive Video for SaskTel. “Security of that content is critical to its owners, the Hollywood studios. We chose the Widevine and HP combination based upon their advanced technology and stellar reputation with the major studios.”
With the convergence of rich media, communications and standards-based IT technology, HP is one of the few companies that has core competence in all key phases of the digital content process: from content creation, management and production to distribution, real-time delivery and final consumption by end users.
“Widevine highly values HP as a partner,” stated Brian Baker, President and CEO of Widevine. “Their place in the market lends valuable experience to the Widevine team. We are pleased to have the Cypher Suite of products chosen by HP and are exploring many cooperative opportunities with them.”
“The HP Rich Media Solutions program is aimed at providing operators with an end-to-end solution for deploying video-on-demand and other high-value interactive TV applications,” said Marco Limena, Vice President, Worldwide Solutions, Network and Service Provider Business, HP. He added, “Widevine Technologies’ robust content security solution adds a valuable component to our portfolio.”
Widevine’s Cypher Suite is based upon the industry’s only Virtual SmartCard?. The Virtual SmartCard improves upon the legacy physical smart cards by providing greater security and flexibility at a lower cost, while still maintaining critical levels of trust using the hardware of the set top box itself.
