Widevine® Technologies To Provide Content Security to UTOPIA

Selected by the largest fiber-to-the-premise project in the country serving approximately 170,000 homes and businesses in 14 Utah cities

Seattle, WA, October 5, 2004 –Widevine® Technologies today announced that UTOPIA (Utah Telecommunication Open Infrastructure Agency) has selected Widevine Cypher® for its IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) network. The deal involves a three year contract, which will offer IPTV, ultra high-speed internet, always-on video monitoring and broadcast quality video telephony to 14 cities in Utah.

UTOPIA is based on DynamicCity’s patent-pending Open Service Provider Network™ (OSPN™) business model. DynamicCity is the company that provided the feasibility, architecture and assisted in arranging the financing for UTOPIA. The OSPN model separates network ownership from service providers, eliminating monopolistic telecommunication business practices while creating choice and competition for the consumer. As such, UTOPIA is one of, if not the world’s largest, fiber-to-the home (FTTH) and fiber-to-the-business (FTTB) projects launched to date.

“Widevine presented a very compelling solution for content protection that we feel will result in the best service possible for our service providers’ customers,” said Paul Morris, executive director for UTOPIA. “The idea of paying for smart cards never appealed to us and Widevine’s industry leading solution provided the security we needed at a cost we feel is right. The fact that Widevine’s products have proven their interoperability with the other key components of our network’s IP video capacity was also a key consideration.”

The Widevine Virtual SmartCard solution significantly lowers the costs of securing content over video networks while dramatically raising the bar on piracy. Today, the Virtual SmartCard is being deployed in broadband video projects throughout the world.

“UTOPIA is a key win for Widevine,” said Brian Baker, President and CEO of Widevine Technologies. “This project is highly visible in the industry and represents another solid case for the Virtual SmartCard and Widevine’s technology.”

For the UTOPIA project, Widevine will deploy with iTVManager from Minerva and set-top-boxes from Amino Communications.
