Second Patent Issued for Widevine Cypher® Content Protection Suite
Patent covers secure delivery of content for consumer entertainment over next generation networks
Seattle, WA, Nov. 21, 2005 –Widevine Technologies, Inc. today announced that the U.S. Patent Office has issued a new patent providing intellectual property protection to its Widevine Cypher® content protection suite.
The new patent U.S. 6,965,993 B2 covering the business rules around video and audio security provides protection in the areas of expiration times on access to content, metering of viewing, transaction processing for these rules and the concept of creating a new user account when one is found not to exist.
This is the second issued patent for Widevine, represented by Darby and Darby, and is a continuation of U.S. 6,449,719 B1 with a priority dating back to 1999. U.S. 6,449,719 B1 provides Widevine protection in the areas of content encryption, transaction processing, conditional access, rule-based rights and entitlements and flow control to include time shifting and trick play.
"The issuance of this patent is significant to the secure delivery of content for consumer entertainment over next generation networks,” said Glenn Morten, Chief Technical Officer of Widevine. "Next generation content delivery networks require new business rules for purchasing and controlling access to content. This patent teaches several of those rules."
“Widevine was founded on the premise that content delivery networks should provide consumers entertainment choice while allowing operators and content owners to grow revenue streams while protecting their intellectual property,” said Brian Baker, patent author and CEO of Widevine. “The Patent Office has clearly recognized the unique offerings developed by Widevine and rewarded its partners, employees and shareholders with the intellectual property protection that patents offer.”
