Widevine® Technologies Selected by Swedish Space Corporation and FastTV to Protect VOD, Broadcast Content
Widevine secures premium content distributed by SSC to downstream operators including Scandinavia’s FastTV
Seattle, WA, Jan. 25, 2006—Widevine Technologies, the world’s most deployed provider of downloadable content protection and digital forensics solutions, today announced that Swedish Space Corporation of Stockholm, Sweden, has chosen Widevine Cypher® Suite to provide content protection distributed through it’s IPTV uplink and downlink service, Stockholm Teleport. SSC distributes linear broadcast and VOD content across their satellite and broadband network to downstream operators, including Scandinavia’s FastTV.
Swedish Space Corporation provides IPTV playout services to city and regional networks across Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Widevine has delivered a comprehensive content protection solution used to secure playout from SSC’s downlink sites. SSC and Widevine have integrated Widevine Cypher into an IPTV delivery infrastructure that initially includes middleware from Dreampark and Kreatel set-top boxes for IPTV operator, FastTV. The Cypher Franchise component of the suite offers content protection to downstream operators at a fraction of the cost of a complete system. Built upon an open content protection platform, Widevine Cypher Suite flexibly interoperates with each operator’s middleware, consumer premises equipment and VOD servers.
“Swedish Space Corporation selected Widevine because of market demand from our customers, based on what their content providers were mandating in the way of approved, robust content security,” says Karl Magnusson, Manager Teleport Services. “With Widevine Cypher and Cypher Franchise we also have an affordable solution that enables our downstream customers to acquire and license premium Hollywood content. We can also affordably extend the capabilities of our single content protection system to support multiple operators remotely and locally.”
“Acquiring popular premium content for a compelling customer offer is critical to successful IPTV deployments,” said Brian Baker, Widevine Technologies CEO. “We truly understand how our cost savings approach for meeting content owners’ license requirements enables multiple operators to share a single Cypher Suite as well as acquire comprehensive conditional access and digital rights management—the protection mandated by the studios.”
According to Stephan Guiance, FastTV’s Managing Director, “Choosing Widevine’s solution was a strategic decision for us because it enables us to optimize the technology to benefit our customers. Widevine is fully adaptable with non-proprietary networks and interoperates with all major middleware (SMS) systems, set top boxes and encoders giving us the flexibility to choose what’s best for our market, enhance our business proposition and have a faster time to market.”
Widevine Cypher Suite offers a hardware and software based solution to ensure content is Secure before distribution. It securely distributes broadcast and VOD content to Widevine Secure set top boxes, PVRs, PCs and mobile devices. Utilizing downloadable Cypher Virtual SmartCard™ client security and a patented application level encryption, Widevine Cypher Suite ensures subscribers only access and view content they have paid for.
Cypher Franchise extends Widevine Cypher Suite to multiple downstream operators enabling them to utilize the encryption keys, entitlements and digital rights capabilities of the Cypher Suite at a fraction of the cost of a complete system. Built on an open video platform, Cypher Franchise enables those same downstream operators to utilize their existing middleware (SMS) systems while getting the content security they require—a critical component to ensuring content remains persistently encrypted to the subscriber.
