Widevine® Secures Largest HDTV Broadcast and VOD Deployment for IPTV
SaskTel acquires and licenses premium HD content from top Hollywood studios
Seattle, Wash., Oct. 16, 2006 –Widevine Technologies, the world’s leading provider of downloadable content protection, forensic watermarking and digital copy protection solutions, today announced it has expanded its content security for SaskTel’s HDTV over IP deployment, the first of its kind, available to SaskTel Max™ customers beginning today.
SaskTel’s new HDTV service is part of a complete broadcast and VOD service offering comprised of 27 Max HD channels, one the largest high definition line-ups available to IPTV subscribers anywhere. The service offers several entertainment theme packages, plus sports, news and movies from top Hollywood studios including Warner Bros. International, Paramount, NBC Universal, Twentieth Century Fox and Sony Pictures. SaskTel has signed multi-year distribution agreements with these studios to solidify a competitive advantage and to harvest new revenue generating services.
“To acquire the highest quality and earliest release windows for our HDTV service, SaskTel had to demonstrate we had the content security to persistently encrypt SD & HD content throughout the entire video distribution chain,” SaskTel President and CEO Robert Watson said. “We chose Widevine because they are highly regarded by Hollywood for HD content protection and are the only company that could scale to the numbers of subscribers we need to support. Additionally, Widevine meets our emerging needs to expand the secure delivery of content to the PC and mobile video platforms.”
“SaskTel’s launch of premium HD services is ground-breaking in the industry. Widevine and SaskTel have proven that safe, secure and flexible consumption of premium HD content is possible in an IPTV environment. We look forward to enabling SaskTel to grow its business with expanded multimedia service offerings,” said Matt Cannard, Vice President of Marketing.
According to Michelle Abraham, principal analyst at In-Stat, “HDTV subscribers are projected to reach 40 million by 2008. Widevine’s experience in securing content for IPTV deployments around the world enables IPTV operators to acquire high quality content to attract and satisfy subscribers which is critical in today's competitive pay-TV market.”
SaskTel’s Max service is one of the largest IP video deployments the world. SaskTel has purchased an additional 50,000 security clients from Widevine for planned growth to protect additional customers. Their service delivery is based upon a tight integration with Alcatel’s iMagic middleware platform, Motorola's VIP 1200 HD/H.264 set top box and Kasenna’s MediaBase media streaming and distribution platform. SaskTel will additionally invest more than $310 million over the next 5 years to bring fiber optic cable closer to the home to increase availability of HDTV and related services to a wider audience.
