Widevine® Allowed Patent on Session Based Watermarking

Widevine’s Fifth Patent Covers Multimedia Protection and Watermarking Claims

Seattle, Wash., Oct. 27, 2006 –Widevine Technologies, the world’s leading provider of downloadable content protection, forensic watermarking and digital copy protection solutions, today announced that the TIPO has issued a new patent which provides intellectual property protection for watermarking of multimedia content. The new patent is intended to provide a licensed solution providing a system and method for session based watermarking of encrypted content.

Some of the concepts taught by Widevine’s latest patent include:

  • Session based watermarking in real-time
  • Using information such as the end-user or receiving client as part of the mark
  • Selective encryption for targeting marking frames
  • Application of digital signatures and/or encryption to the session mark
  • Use of a watermarking bridge for linear content marking
  • Use of a streaming server plug-in for content marketing

Watermarking is emerging as a fundamental building block for securing premium multimedia content delivery across any IP video network. This capability is critical for operators who are serious about enabling high definition and early release window content.

According to Glenn Morten, Widevine’s CTO and patent co-author, “Session based watermarking appears to be a good solution for the analog hole, tracking digital breaches and may become a studio requirement in the next 12 months. We have recently been approached by several tier 1 MSOs who believe session based watermarking will allow better content windows and potentially HD content.”

This is the fifth patent awarded to Widevine. Previous patents include: U.S. 6,449,719 B1, U.S. 6,965,993 B2, U.S. 7,007,170 B2, and U.S No.7,043,473. Widevine currently has over 40 pending US patents and numerous international applications.

“I am pleased with the rapid growth in our intellectual property portfolio,” said Brian Baker, Widevine’s CEO. “Widevine has one of the largest concentrations of digital rights management expertise in the world, including this patent’s inventors--Andre Jacobs, Oscar Zhuk, PhD, Glenn Morten and Eric Shapiro. This latest patent further proves Widevine’s technical capabilities and ability to offer a sustainable competitive advantage for IP video operators worldwide.”
