Sonaecom Selects Widevine® Technologies To Secure Portugal's First IPTV Deployment

Widevine’s Muliplatform, Multiformat, Multidevice Solution Chosen to Protect Premium Content Delivered to Three Screens

London, Mar. 5, 2007 –Widevine Technologies, the world’s leading provider of downloadable content protection, forensic watermarking and digital copy protection solutions, today announced it is securing premium Hollywood programming for the first IPTV service in Portugal—Clix SmartTV, offered by Sonaecom, the country’s second largest telecommunications provider.

Portugal’s has one of the highest penetration rates of PayTV in Southern Europe and 1.4 million broadband access lines. Sonaecom determined it could take advantage of technological advances and be a strong competitor with IPTV services. Today, Sonaecom’s national network reaches 1.6 million homes in Portugal—approximately 50 percent of the population—and delivers multimedia content secured by Widevine to set top boxes, PCs and mobile devices.

“Sonaecom wanted to take advantage of explosive broadband growth and deliver a truly converged multi-service network offering. Widevine’s ability to protect multiple formats, multiple platforms and multiple devices using a single protection solution is a key factor in our growth plans for Clix SmarTV,” says Susanna Barbato, Sonaecom’s Director of IPTV. “And because content acquisition is one of the most critical elements of an IPTV deployment it was important to select a content security vendor that could ensure we can meet future expansion requirements to the PC and mobile platforms. Widevine is the proven content security vendor for enabling us to acquire the premium content that differentiates our service.”

Clix SmarTV offers a complete lineup of broadcast television, video on demand (VOD) and subscription video on demand (SVOD) with more than 100 channels and several entertainment packages including premium broadcast from Discovery Channel, Disney and movies from major Hollywood studios including Warner Bros and Buena Vista. The service has been successfully deployed in the cities of Lisbon and Porto. Clix has signed multi-year distribution agreements with Hollywood studios to solidify a competitive advantage and develop new revenue generating services, including movies and other programs delivered to PCs.

“Sonaecom’s selection of Widevine proves Widevine’s content protection technologies enable service providers to license premium content and deliver innovative services,” said Brian Baker, Widevine’s President and CEO. “We are pleased to work with Sonaecom to deliver new revenue generating business models and secure the future of its IP video initiatives. Our growing European presence proves our commitment as a customer-driven organization that supports our customers as they expand services to three screens.”
