Widevine Granted Patent for Downloadable Conditional Access

Eighth patent covers two way separable security and Virtual SmartCard usage

SEATTLE, WA, August 13, 2007 – Widevine Technologies, the world’s leading provider of downloadable content protection, forensic watermarking and digital copy protection solutions, today announced that the Korean Intellectual Property Office has issued a new patent which provides intellectual property protection for use of Widevine Cypher® Virtual SmartCard™ technologies to enable separable security of multimedia content.

The new patent is intended to provide a licensed downloadable security solution for content encryption, transaction processing, conditional access, rule-based rights and entitlements as well as flow control to include time shifting, trick play and progressive downloads. Virtual SmartCard technology has become the foundation for delivering cost effective separable security in consumer devices and is critical for operators who are serious about offering multiplatform, multiformat service delivery.

According to Glenn Morten, Widevine’s CTO and patent co-inventor, “Separable security solutions like Widevine’s Virtual SmartCard benefit video operators, consumer device manufacturers as well as consumers by lowering the security related costs of delivering interactive video services. In contrast, physical cards such as smart cards and CableCards--and specially designed hardware components that are embedded within consumer devices—can add as much as US$50 to the cost of the device. These costs trickle down to the operator and consumer.”

Some of the concepts taught by Widevine’s latest patent KR 10-0747755-0000 include:

  • Content encryption
  • Transaction processing
  • Conditional access
  • Rule based rights and entitlements
  • Flow control to include time shifting, trick play and progressive download
  • Business rules around video and audio security covering:
    • Expiration times on access to content
    • Metering of viewing
  • Use of Virtual SmartCard technology
  • Tamper detection and response

Widevine’s intellectual property portfolio now comprises eight issued U.S. and international patents, with 281 claims. Widevine has more than 45 other patents pending in the USPTO and international pipelines. Widevine’s patents cover content security for video delivery to multiple devices, in multiple formats and on multiple platforms including:

  • Downloadable conditional access (DCAS) which is the basis of the FCC’s separable security requirement.
  • Selective encryption to enable persistent encryption of broadcast, VOD, streamed media and file downloaded content on any network transport including cable, telco, internet and mobile.
  • Digital copy protection using real-time, evolving detectors to monitor, detect and respond to piracy post decryption.

Widevine’s patents include: U.S. 6,449,719 B1, U.S. 6,965,993 B2, U.S. 7,007,170 B2, U.S 7,043,473, U.S. 7,150,045, R.O.C. 1268080, U.S. 7,165,175 and KR 10-0747755-0000.
