Widevine® Reaffirms Verimatrix Patent Infringement Is About Conditional Access & DRM

Verimatrix VCAS is in violation of Widevine patent portfolio

SEATTLE, WA, October 1, 2007 – Widevine® Technologies, the leading provider of downloadable conditional access (DCAS), digital rights management and digital copy protection for over 125 video operators worldwide, today reaffirmed that the focus of its patent lawsuit concerns Verimatrix’s VCAS product—not forensic watermarking. The lawsuit follows attempts by Widevine to openly license its intellectual property to Verimatrix.

Specifically, Verimatrix’s content security product, such as the Verimatrix Content Authority System (VCAS), infringes on Widevine’s Apparatus, System and Method for Selectively Encrypting Different Portions of Data Sent Over A Network patent number 7,165,175. Verimatrix continues to sell its VCAS product which practices Widevine’s selective encryption patent.

“Widevine reaffirms that this patent infringement lawsuit is specific to Verimatrix’s conditional access and DRM product which practices selective encryption—a key feature for efficient and cost effective secure video distribution,” said Mani Aliabadi, Widevine Technologies’ General Counsel. "It has nothing to do with watermarking, fingerprinting or Digimarc—contrary to recent public statements made by Verimatrix. Widevine is confident that the evidence will demonstrate infringement by Verimatrix's VCAS product and expects a prompt resolution of the suit, including an injunction and an award of Widevine's lost profits. Damages could be increased by up to three times because of Verimatrix's prior knowledge of Widevine's intellectual property."

Widevine’s intellectual property portfolio now comprises eight issued patents, with approximately 281 claims. Widevine has more than 45 other patents pending in the USPTO and international pipelines. Its patents cover content security for video delivery to multiple devices, in multiple formats on multiple platforms with unique selective encryption capabilities and forensic watermarking solutions that have been developed using open standards and interfaces.
