New Centre for Content Protection Underscores Importance of Securing Hollywood Content
Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom Leads the Way in Licensing Premium Content Enabled by Widevine’s Multiplatform Content Security
SEATTLE, December 4, 2007 — With the launch of the world’s first Centre for Content Protection in Singapore last month, one service provider stands out for its success in acquiring and licensing Hollywood content. Chunghwa Telecom, the largest video-on-demand operator in Asia, licenses high-definition content directly from major Hollywood Studios including Sony Pictures, Warner Bros., Paramount and NBC Universal. As the first operator to acquire exclusive live broadcast and video-on-demand distribution rights of the Beijing Olympics 2008 in Taiwan and its library of 3,000 movie titles, Chunghwa expects to top one million IPTV subscribers in 2008.
To support plans to expand its video on demand and linear broadcast services, and deliver to a range of consumer devices, Chunghwa needed content protection to acquire and distribute premium programming for optimal revenue generation. To accomplish this, Widevine was selected for its comprehensive content protection solution, ability to scale to a large subscriber base and proven experience securing multiple consumer devices.
“Our ability to acquire and license premium content for our IPTV MOD business has been greatly enhanced by Widevine’s comprehensive content protection solutions. We chose Widevine over other technologies because of its unique relationship with Hollywood Studios and ability to work within our current and future ecosystems as we expand our services internationally,” said Yi-Fong Chang, Chunghwa Telecoms’ Deputy Manager Director of the Digital Content Development Department.
“The increasing demand for Hollywood content in Asia--especially in China--along with increased consumer demand for viewing premium content on PCs, Macs and other consumer devices increases content owner concerns that their high-value content is delivered securely. We’re experiencing significant growth in Asia with service operators and content owners due to our ability to deliver a single content protection solution that secures delivery of high-value content to multiple platforms, in multiple formats and to any device. Our expansion in the region includes offices in Singapore, Taipei, Beijing and Shanghai,” said Widevine Technologies CEO Brian Baker. “The Centre for Content Protection launches at a pivotal time as the need to expand digital delivery securely and flexibly explodes in the region.”
The Motion Picture Association (MPA), with support from the Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA), officially launched the Asia Pacific region’s first Centre for Content Protection in Singapore on November 28, 2007.
The Centre’s stated goals are to expand consumer viewing choices by promoting technological measures that permit secure distribution of digital television; educating the public on the “digital transition”; and supporting technical solutions for legal downloads, home networking and remote access.
