Widevine® Secures Viginta's One Way DTT Video Service
Widevine Cypher® deployed as single content protection suite secures video delivery across DTT, hybrid QAM and IPTV
SEATTLE, June 30, 2008 — Widevine Technologies, the only provider of multiformat and multiplatform DCAS, DRM and digital copy protection solutions, today announced that leading Lithuanian multichannel television, telephone and internet service provider Viginta has selected Widevine Cypher to secure content delivered over DTT, hybrid QAM (cable) and IPTV deployments. This marks the first time a downloadable conditional access and DRM has been implemented in a one way DTT network, drastically reducing the time and cost associated with maintaining consumer device security.
“The Viginta project is a first for any downloadable conditional access and DRM in a one way DTT network,” said Brian Baker, CEO of Widevine. “We are pleased to expand our efforts to serve DTT and cable customers with the same great content protection that has enabled IPTV operators to keep security related costs low while acquiring the premium content that is compelling to customers—regardless of format, platform or network.”
Given the often high cost and complexity of managing varied network delivery systems, companies such as Viginta require a method to simplify the task of premium content acquisition and delivery using a highly scalable and proven solution that can dynamically download updates to consumer devices without the need for shipping and supporting physical smart card media.
After an exhaustive search for point solutions to enable premium content acquisition that met only part of their overall content protection requirements, Viginta chose Cypher for its unique ability to deploy a single head-end security architecture. Cypher will be used to manage the delivery of broadcast and VOD over its multiple networks delivery systems including MMDS, fiber rich Metro Ethernet and Hybrid Fiber Coaxial networks to a wide range of consumer device models.
“UAB Viginta originally chose Widevine Cypher for its IPTV deployment and was looking for ways to leverage that existing investment over all of its managed networks. As Viginta acquires other operators, it inherits various networks and wants a single conditional access solution across these networks. When we looked into a downloadable security approach to solve this problem, we realized that in most cases the industry is pretty divided between encryption for one-way and two-way networks,” said Paul Shmotolokha, Chairman for Viginta. “Widevine has stepped up to the challenge and offers a unique ability to fit with whatever ecosystem we choose. The obvious cost savings of running one downloadable CAS system across our DTT, Cable and IPTV deployments should make running our internal customer service systems easier and our business more profitable.”
Widevine Cypher, now in its fourth generation, is designed to provide studio approved content protection over any network infrastructure. Its multiplatform and multiformat support offers operators the flexibility, choice and control over the ecosystem and consumer devices that best fit with video operators’ business strategy.
