Widevine Intellectual Property Portfolio Grows Dramatically
New granted patents result in robust consumer and content centric patent portfolio
SEATTLE, August 21, 2008 — Widevine Technologies, the only provider of multiformat, multiplatform DRM and digital copy protection solutions, today announced that intellectual property offices worldwide have granted Widevine new intellectual property claims for next generation content protection. Widevine’s portfolio has grown to 55 issued patents, with more than 1900 claims, granted by more than 25 sovereign nations.
"Widevine has invested significantly in research and product development to connect digital media with consumers,” said Glenn Morten, Widevine CTO. “Our priority is to deliver products and solutions that enable digital media distribution and consumption. Widevine’s patent portfolio offers consumer device manufacturers, service operators and content owners the ability to operate freely in the patent laden world of content protection.”
Traditional content protection solutions are value chain centric—focusing on tightly binding video distribution systems and devices to a particular CAS or DRM vendor. In contrast, Widevine has separated the dependence on the distribution system, network and device. This content and consumer centric approach enables video operators the freedom to deliver premium multimedia content to any device, anywhere and at anytime using patented content protection. The claims found in Widevine’s intellectual property portfolio are fundamental to how content protection must function in today’s consumer and content focused marketplace.
Important concepts patented by Widevine include: application level encryption, cross domain content security, device certificates, downloadable conditional access, evolving detectors, fingerprinting, flow control, forensic watermarking, media tracking, obfuscation, real time piracy detection & response, security renewals, quality of service and usage controls.
"Widevine has made the protection of our intellectual property a priority since the 1990's,” said Mani Aliabadi, Widevine General Counsel. “During the last 12 months we have seen our granted portfolio grow by more than 400 percent, and we are pleased that patent offices throughout the world have acknowledged our innovative leadership.”
Widevine has a number of product licensing programs designed to meet content owner, service operator, consumer device manufacturer and software vendor requirements. For more information, contact: licensing@widevine.com.
